The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles originated in an American comic book published  in
1984. The concept arose from a humorous drawing sketched out by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird.  intended to parody four of the most popular comics of the early 1980s:
Much of the Turtles' mainstream success is owed to a licensing agent, Mark Freedman, who sought out Eastman and Laird to propose wider merchandising opportunities for the offbeat property. In January 1988 , accompanied by the popular Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, the TMNT were soon catapulted into pop culture history.  The character's presence has extended beyond his origins to Clothing and Accessories , Bags and Briefcases Hats , Keychains , Outerwear , Scarves and Ties ,Shirts, Watches, Collectibles, Chess Sets , Miscellaneous products, Sculptures , Desk and Book Accessories, Bookmarks , Calendars , Journals and Stationery ,Sheet Music ,Bedding , Home Decor , Mugs & Glassware ,Ornaments ,Wall Hangings , Jewelry, Bracelets, Earrings , Necklaces , Pins , Rings ,Watches , Party Bundles, Posters & Prints, School Supplies, Bags and Briefcases, Bookmarks , Journals and Stationery , Lunchboxes , Toys & Games, Action Figures,
Diecast Figures and Sculptures, Chess Sets, Dolls , Games , Plush , Puzzles and Trading Cards. At the height of the frenzy, the Turtles'  could be found on a wide range of children's merchandise, from PEZ dispensers to skateboards, breakfast cereal, toothpaste, school supplies and cameras. Today, there is a resurgence in the Turtles' popularity with the success of the recent animated series, a new line of Playmates action figures, Konami and Ubisoft's video games, and a computer-animated feature film.
